A man says he was left “disgusted” after finding a cockroach in his McDonalds takeaway meal.
Ciaron Kelly returned to the branch with two half-eaten meals after his wife apparently found the bug in her McChicken sandwich.
He was refunded the £11.47 cost of the McChicken meal and a Chicken Legend meal.
Now McDonald’s has said sorry to the dad-of-one after ‘falling short’ of its ‘high standards’.
Actor Ciaron says he bought the meals on Thursday before taking them to their home.
He said: “We ate our fries, which were fine, and then my wife said there was something in her burger. I thought it was probably a hair or something.
“It turned out there was a bug in her burger. That’s when I stopped eating. I had only taken one bite from mine and she was halfway through hers.
“We managed to fish it out with a chip and, on closer inspection, we believe it is a cockroach. I was in sheer disbelief.
“I thought I was very measured in returning the food and contacting the Food Standards Agency.
“I understand that the volume of food created is huge and the pressure on the staff is huge. But this is not something I would expect from a chain the size of McDonald’s.
The insect is set to be sent to McDonald’s head office for ‘further investigation’.
A McDonald’s spokesman said: “We are sorry to hear about this customer’s experience. Food safety is of the utmost importance to us and we place great emphasis on quality control, following rigorous standards to avoid any imperfections.
“We are disappointed that, on this occasion, we have fallen short of the high standards we set ourselves.
“When the matter was brought to the attention of the restaurant, we apologised to the customer and issued a full refund.
“We understand the customer is currently in contact with our customer services team which has requested the item to be sent in for further investigation.”
